Which car should I buy?+
Start from your budget, how many seats you need and how you drive, then pick the three things that matter most to you, such as reliability, fuel economy or safety. WiseCar's quiz asks exactly that in seven questions and scores every trim of every model we cover against your answers, so you get three specific cars and model years to look at.
How does the WiseCar car finder work?+
Each trim is scored on budget fit, seating, how well it suits your main use, fuel type, your priorities and your driving conditions, then re-scored with official data: EPA fuel economy and NHTSA crash ratings, complaints and recalls. Cars that start above your budget never outrank ones within it.
Is WiseCar free?+
Yes. You never create an account, hand over an email address, or hear from a dealer. We don't take payment for placement, and every car is ranked by the same rules.
Where does the data come from?+
Fuel economy and EV range come from the EPA's fueleconomy.gov. Crash-test ratings, owner complaints and recalls come from NHTSA. Prices are our estimates of typical new and used prices by trim.
How do you measure reliability?+
There's no free official reliability rating, so we build a 0–100 signal for each model year from NHTSA records. We count owner complaints, weigh how severe they are, and factor in recalls. Complaints are normalized per 10,000 vehicles sold, so a best-seller isn't punished just for selling in huge numbers. It's a proxy, not a survey, and newer models have had less time to collect complaints.
Should I buy new or used?+
Used cars stretch a budget much further: a few years old, many models cost thousands less with most of their life ahead. New makes sense if you want the latest safety tech, a full warranty or a model that's just been redesigned. The quiz lets you choose new, used or either and prices each accordingly.
